Different Types of Alopecia

Throughout my career I have come across many cases of Alopecia (bald patches) in varying degrees of severity. My job is to work around the hair and give a haircut that can cover the areas as best as I can (if the cases are not TOO severe) Because this condition can affect both sexes (although most common in late teenage years, early childhood, young adulthood) it can happen with people of all ages so I wanted to write about the basics of Alopecia so people can understand and be made aware of it. We as hairstylists mostly come across Numbers 2 and 3 types (see below).

ALOPECIA AREATA

What is it?

It is a condition in which hair is lost from some or all areas of the body, usually the scalp. It can cause anywhere from one or two bald patches (which is most common) to can spread to the entire scalp and epidermis. Alopecia is NOT contagious. What types are there?

1. Diffuse Alopecia Areata - Hair lost more diffusely over the whole scalp

2. Alopecia Areata Monolocuris - One spot of baldness

3. Alopecia Areata Multilocularis - mutiple areas of hair loss

4. Alopecia Areata Totalis - Loss of all hair on the scalp

5. Alopecia Areata Universalis - Loss of all body hair

6. Alopecia Areata Barbae - limited only to the beard

What does it look like?

Varying degrees and sizes of bald areas and patches to full on loss of hair.
What causes it?

Some of the strong suggestions lead us to believe that the factors that cause it are:

Hereditary - Families with 1 or 2 affected family members or members with Autoimmune Disorder (in which the body attacks is own hair follicles) Emotional Stress, or an infectious agent/germ can trigger off the condition.

What can be done about it?

With cases where there are small patches involved, Steroid Injections are used in the sites. Other medications (ointments and topical cream) can also be used in different combinations. In 90% of cases, the hair will ultimately grow back. In more severe cases of hair loss, there has been limited success treating Alopecia, and in the case of Alopecia Totalis, adapting to the disease rather than trying to treat and cure it, is probably the best way to go. For example, wearing your baldhead as is, or wearing wigs., but lets all remember that Bald is Beautiful!

Can Stress Make Your Hair Fall Out?

I have a blog that focuses on hair loss.  A common question that I get is "can stress or hardship cause hair loss?"  Readers commonly tell me that they go to doctors and / or dermatologists reporting hair loss and are told that only physical stress on your body can affect your hair - not mental or psychological stress.  But, if you spend any amount of time on hair loss forums, you'll see that countless people disagree with this.  Many can find no other cause for their hair loss and shedding and can see a distinct correlation between the two.  I'll discuss my take on the stress / hair loss combination in the following article.

Hair Loss Caused By Physical Stress:  There's absolutely no question that physical stress and illness can cause hair loss.  One hair loss condition that fits into this category is called telogen effluvium or TE.  Common causes of this condition are pregnancy, surgery, illness, fluctuations in hormones, or changing your medications.

Another cause of hair loss is androgenic alopecia or thinning caused by DHT, sebum, or excess androgens or build up on your scalp.  With this condition, there is stress on the scalp and / or the hair follicles, but there is a problem just the same.

The Mind / Body Connection: Although specialists will tell you that mental or psychological stress doesn't cause hair shedding or loss, I disagree.  I've heard too many people tell stories of this to discount it.  But, what I believe happens is that the mental stress actually translates to physical changes in your body.

For example, when you are under a great deal of hardship or anxiety, your body pumps out cortisol like mad.  This can affect your thyroid and adrenal hormones and can also produce more androgens.  So, now what started out as mental is effecting you physically and now you have  two potential causes of hair loss - changes in hormones and increased androgens.
So, while good old mental turmoil may not affect your hair directly, it can affect your body, it's hormones, and your scalp - which all could in turn affect your hair.

Treating Stress Induced Hair Loss: Obviously, the first treatment for this is going to be to reduce your stress.  This is often easier said than done though. And of course, the more you worry about your loss, the more cortisol you pump out, so that you're contributing to a vicious cycle.  It's so important to take care of yourself right now and try to separate yourself from this as much as you can.

Don't count your hairs.  Don't constantly look in the mirror.  I used to run my fingers along the shaft of my hair to see how many would shed out.  This became almost an addictive behavior that only caused more turmoil.  Get out of the house.  Distract yourself and participate in things you enjoy.  Do whatever you have to do to break the cycle of worrying about it.

Another thing that you should address is inflammation.  Often, quick or dramatic hair loss goes hand in hand with inflammation of the scalp, because so many hairs are changing and dying off.  Using a gentle, yet anti inflammatory shampoo (you can often make these yourself for best results.) And, natural treatments like tea tree oil or emu oil can help with the inflammation and can help to also support healthy, thick regroth.
But, it's important to be careful to rotate your treatments. Often, the essential oils are quite thick and can clog or irritate your follicles if you're not careful.  However, if they are diluted and rotated correctly, they can be very effective and healing.

How do I know all of this? Because I lived it. In my quest to end my hair loss, I looked at my triggers, my iron, my thyroid, my adrenals, my hormones, and my scalp's health in my quest to end the nightmare. It was a long, hard, frustrating journey which all but wrecked my self esteem but I finally found something that helped quite a bit. How to Find the Most Suitable Hair Loss Treatment and Increase the Chances of Stopping Hair Loss

Introduction
There are several types of hair loss and balding. While the mechanism of the phenomenon of hair loss and baldness is not fully understood, there is vast knowledge on the ability to treat the types of hair loss and baldness by medication or natural means.

We are dividing the alopecia types into treatable and non-treatable conditions and we shall hereby explain how one can evaluate the chances of successful treatment in the treatable conditions.

When evaluating the chances of improving the condition of the hair, the most important criteria is the condition of the hair follicles. As long as the hair follicles are alive, there is a chance to grow new hair. Otherwise, there is no basis for any treatment to succeed and the only options are cosmetic- wig, hair transplant etc.

Life period of the hair follicles may reach up to twenty-five years. The hair follicles grow hair in cycles of growth and fall. In the process of hair loss, each cycle of growth produces shorter, thinner hair and there is less pigment (color).

When the scalp has a bright plume, it indicates that the hair follicle is still alive but dormant. Given the appropriate specialist's knowledge and therapy, the hair follicle can be stimulated to grow hair. However if the surface is completely smooth, it indicates that the hair follicle is no longer alive and there is zero chance to grow hair- except in some cases as explained below (Alopecia Areata, Totalis and Universalis).

The different types of hair loss and the chances of growth of new hair are hereby given.

Non Treatable conditions 

The conditions of hair loss which have no chance of hair regrowth are: Alopecia from birth, Scarring Alopecia, Traction Alopecia and Lupus disease.

Alopecia from birth is a rare condition, where the infant is born without hair follicles.

In Scarring Alopecia the infected zone looks like a scar and the hair follicles are dead. The reasons of the phenomena are unknown. The chances of growing new hair are zero, but with proper treatment the expansion of the Scarring Alopecia can be stopped.

In Traction Alopecia the hair is pulled out of the scalp and the hair follicle becomes weak and dies.
In alopecia which is caused by Lupus disease, the skin is rough and pink and the chances of growth of hair is almost non existent.

Treatable Conditions 

The conditions of hair loss which has a chance to be treated successfully are: Male Pattern Alopecia, Alopecia Areata, Alopecia Totalis and Alopecia Universalis.

Male Pattern Alopecia is common male baldness. It's characteristics are loss of hair at the front and crown area first. In many cases, there is still at least hair plume, hair loss and baldness can be stopped by affecting the hair follicles.

In Alopecia Areata condition, typical round hair loss patches evolve rapidly. Sometimes the bald patches spread to full hair loss of the scalp (Alopecia Totalis) or even whole body areas (Alopecia Universalis). The phenomenon could harm men, women and small children. Conventional medicine assumes the Alopecia Areata condition is an autoimmune disease, though the exact mechanism of Alopecia Areata is not known nor fully understood.

In many cases Alopecia Areata is caused by psychological pressure: people who experienced trauma have sometimes lost entire hair within hours or days.

Evaluating Chances of Successful Treatment 

As explained in the introduction, the condition of the hair follicles is the most important criteria for evaluating the chances of successful treatment. Existence of thin white hair is a visible sign for living hair follicles. The thin white hair can be noticed when examining the scalp from close distance, with good light conditions. Sometimes viewing the scalp from an angle against light source helps to see the thin white hair.

Naturally, when there is thin white hair on the alopecia area, it indicates that the hair follicles are weak but alive, so there is a basis to grow hair, given the proper treatment. But when the alopecia area is smooth, the evaluation depends on the alopecia type:

In male pattern alopecia condition, smooth scalp is a clear indication that the hair follicles are not alive and there is no chance to grow new hair. Keeping this all in mind I'm going to list the vitamins and minerals that are reported to be the best for enhancing or stimulating hair growth, again if the hair follicles are still alive. Make sure to get advice from your hair loss doctor or naturopathic doctor before you start taking any supplements. Some supplements can be harmful if you're taking certain drugs or medications for example.

Take the following information with a grain of salt. New studies and research come out often and any new study or report can refute what has been reported in the past.

First of all the amino acids, arginine, cysteine, lysine and tyrosine, are used in hair loss treatment.
Arginine deficiency has been reported as one reason for hair loss.

Cysteine at dosages of 1,000 mg. to 2,000 mg. per day has been reported to spur hair growth and help stop hair loss. It's supposed to help prevent free radical damage to the hair follicles. Some reports show that cysteine causes a noticeable improvement in hair growth. Eight percent of human hair is made up of cysteine. Many people who have thin or slow growing hair have reported they've noticed considerable improvement in their hair growth when they used 3,000 mg. to 5,000 mg. of cysteine per day.

Lysine deficiency can result in hair loss. Lysine is often used for herpes-related infections or prevention.
Tyrosine - when hair loss is caused by a low thyroid condition, called hypothyroid, tyrosine has been known to alleviate it.

Other supplements -

Enzymes in the form of superoxide dismutase (SOD) are supposed to decrease hair loss by inhibiting superoxide free radicals on nitric oxide.

A linoleic acid deficiency may result in hair loss, research suggests.

Minerals -

The important minerals to consider are copper, iron, silicon and zinc. Minerals need to be in balance with each other. Too much of one mineral in some cases can cause an imbalance in another. Make sure to get help from an informed health professional.

Copper can help stimulate hair growth if a copper deficiency is present and is involved in the prevention and possibly treatment of hair loss. Too much copper can actually cause hair loss. I have wondered whether the copper bracelets that used to be in vogue and may still be, for arthritis, would be worth a try.

Recently there have been good studies on iron deficiency as a possible cause of hair loss. Taking iron supplements is not a good idea though. Getting iron naturally in food would be a better choice. Too much iron can cause some serious health problems.

Potassium deficiency can be a cause of hair loss it's thought.

Silicon is supposed to be able to stimulate hair growth. Silicon is present in cucumbers among other foods.
Early or premature hair loss may be a result of zinc deficiency so says some research. Again zinc can cause hair loss.

The sulfuric compound methylsulfonylmethane (MSM) may help hair growth due to its sulfur content.
Vitamins -

Many vitamins may be involved in hair loss. Research suggests that hair loss or hair growth may be a result of deficiencies of these vitamins - biotin, folic acid, inositol and PABA (para aminobenzoic acid) and PABA may help to prevent hair loss due to its antioxidant properties.

The nicotinic acid form of vitamin B3, which is applied to the scalp, may help to improve blood circulation to the scalp (and may help stop the loss of hair) - you must have live hair follicles present. The suggested dose has been about 35 mg. of nicotinic acid daily.

Vitamin B5 deficiency causes hair loss in animals but hasn't been proven in humans.

Vitamin C may help hair growth by improving the circulation of blood to the scalp.

Taking too much vitamin A can cause temporary and reversible hair loss it's reported.

These are the vitamins and minerals and other supplements that have been researched, reviewed, studied or reported on in various medical journals. Before starting any hair loss treatment or remedy to help stimulate your living hair follicles and/or to prevent further loss, make sure you see your doctor first. If your hair follicles are not alive than it is unknown today what will help them short of hair transplant. Some cases of hair loss are reversed once the cause is known. Some cannot be reversed with what we know today. And be patient for whatever method you may decide to use.
